Tree Planting at School Road / Tape Lane and Sawpit Road

March 1997

Trees were planted on the verge opposite the Village Hall on School Road / Tape Lane to soften the view of the recent development of Martineau Lane. A £75 grant was obtained from WDC and eight trees were planted by volunteers. Chris James made the task much easier by digging the planting holes out with a mechanical digger.

Five field maple and one wild cherry were planted on the verge with a further two oaks on the verge in Sawpit Road.

Each Spring since planting the trees have been hand weeded and re-mulched. This ensures that the trees have no competition for water and nutrients and get off to a good start.

In the Spring of 2000 strimmer guards were fitted to protect the trees. The base of the trees had become damaged by mowers. (A tree dies if all the bark is stripped off around the trunk.) Speedy action was needed to ensure our trees lived to maturity.
